Foiled A Third Time

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

I loved all the foiled accents on Savvy Saturday. The colors shine on our Premium Craft Foil and with so many color choices, I can’t decide. My solution is to always have the 12 piece Assorted Colors of Premium Craft Foil on hand because its variety of colors – a girl has a right to change her mind, right?!

With all this cold weather, I wanted something “Spring-y” for a friendship card. I pulled out S4-249 Scalloped Circle LG #7 (the smallest die being #1) to create a window card.

I had this beautiful blue craft foil that I wanted to frame the card front with. So I cut the middle of the craft foil with the S4-249 Scalloped Circle LG #7.

Cut Sandwich with Craft Foil (from bottom up):
White Master Mat
Magnetic Spacer Plate
S4-249 Scalloped Circle LG #7
Premium Craft Foil (color side down)
White Master Mat

The I2-1004 Impressabilities™ Flower was a perfect embossing background for the theme I wanted to create with this card. I cut the I2-1004 Impressabilities™ Flower into strips and positioned it to cover most of the craft foil frame.

Emboss Sandwich with Craft Foil (from bottom up):
White Master Mat
I2-1004 Impressabilties™ Flower
Premium Craft Foil (color side up)
Tan Embossing Pad
White Master Mat

Leaving the I2-1004 Impressabilities™ Flower embedded in the craft foil, I sanded away to highlight the embossing. Loved how it turned out.

Using My Mind’s Eye 29th Street Market Collection, I cut a window on my card front by placing the S4-249 Big Scalloped Circle LG #7 with the Magnetic Spacer Plate inside the card (card front is folded on the inside). Then I embossed by replacing the Magnetic Spacer Plate with the Tan Embossing Pad. The scalloped cut out will be used later so I put it aside.

Stamping the JustRite Stampers Friendship Borders & Center Round 3 1/4″ set onto the My Mind’s Eye 29th Street Market Collection, I cut/embossed the image into two separate pieces using S4-114 Standard Circle LG #6 & #4.

I adhered the cut out from the S4-249 Big Scalloped Circle LG #7 and the stamped image to the inside of the card. Make sure to position them to peek out through the window of the card front. I used Scrapbook Adhesive by 3L 3D Foam Square to “lift” the middle of the stamped image.

On the card front, I adhered the foiled window and added ribbon to the bottom. If you can see the bottom right corner, I added a “charm” by cutting a flower from the I2-1004 Impressabilities™ Flower. You will notice that I added some Flower Soft and Copic to add color and texture to the image.

Here are some other examples on what our Design Team Members Linda Duke and Janine Blackwelder created with their craft foil:

If you are looking for another kind of bling, I suggest giving our Premium Craft Foil a try for your next project.

Savvy Saturday~Foiled Again!

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

Today I thought it might be fun to design with some of Spellbinders Premium Craft Foils. They are such a blast in the Wizard™ when cut with our die templates or embossed with our Impressabilities™ templates. Check out the colors we have available in our 12-Piece Assorted Colors pack. All of these pieces have silver on the reverse side. This is such a bonus because you can always color it to match your project, like the red hearts and blue scalloped oval “cloud” are in this layout:

First, I found a photo I wanted to use to make a layout for my husband for Valentine’s Day. I looked in my stash for red craft foil and…and I didn’t have any. So, I decided to make some.

I grabbed some craft foil from a box that was stuffed full. The piece I used had seen better days and was pretty wrinkled. I ran it through the Wizard™ in an embossing sandwich, to get rid of all the folds. I love to work with it this way.

I pulled out my favorite embossing template I2-1009 Flourish Impressabilities™. To airbrush through the template, I layered the following: a 12×12″ piece of chipboard, my Magnetic Spacer Plate, black side up, scratch paper, F-003 Green Premium Craft Foil and the I2-1009 Flourish Impressabilities™. The Magnetic Spacer Plate holds the Impressabilities™ template down and helps get a crisp image from the airbrushing. Here is the stack (off-set so you can see all the elements) and the colored foil.

Next, I die cut several different hearts from the gorgeous foil: S4-136 Classic Hearts (#1, beginning at the center, #2), S3-107 Decorative Photo Corners (the heart). Then I snipped a small slit at the center top of the hearts. I crossed over the tops to give them dimension. (Tip: To keep the heart closed, place a drop of glue at the cross-over point.)

For a great distressed look on my blue “cloud”, I cut the S4-251 Big Scalloped Ovals LG (#5). I sprayed it with Glimmer Mist, and I embossed it with the I2-1009 Flourish Impressabilities™ template, placing the foil on top of the template, with the sprayed side down and the embossing pad on top of that.

Then, I airbrushed with BV04 Blue Berry Sketch marker and sanded it. The Glimmer Mist “underlay” gives the piece a subtle shading and interesting distressed look.

Finally I put it all together in a layout, along with my fun pics and two “clouds” of S4-251 Big Scalloped Ovals LG (#4). Now all I have to do is wrap it and give it to my husband for Valentine’s.

Supplies: Wizard™, 12-Piece Assorted Colors, F-002 Green Premium Craft Foil, S3-107 Decorative Photo Corners (for the middle sized heart), S4-136 Classic Hearts, I2-1009 Flourish Impressabilities™, S4-251 Big Scalloped Ovals LG (Spellbinders™), Chatterbox artsy.licious Fine Illustrated paper in Chocolate; Core’dinations red cardstock; Copic Sketch Markers-R29 Lipstick Red, BV04 Blue Berry, Spica Chocolate Glitter Pen, Air Brush System; My Mind’s Eye Free Bird “Peace” Waves paper; Glue Dots, Craft Dots

Another 3D Layered Element

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

I love opening the Savvy Saturday blog post each week to see what amazing thing my team mates have come up with and this week was no exception. Sherry Cheever began our little fiesta when she posted on the Spellbinders™ Surprise Party! with this great card project. Then Margie picked up the ball with her lovely card. Now, it’s my turn, and I decided to use the same layering technique but with some airbrushing. Here is the result.

I began by cutting one of our new die templates S4-264 Nested Eggs. (Being released on January 24th at CHA in California) which was revealed by Janine Blackwelder during the party. Here is how I laid out the die templates on the Magnetic Spacer Plate, using all of them.

Because I stacked the pieces, cutting them in the center was not a problem and it allowed me to just make one pass in the Wizard to cut them all. The thickness of paper will determine whether you can do this or not. You may need to take two passes. I used a sheet of color copy paper that works great with Copic markers. It was an 8½ x 11″ regular sized sheet that I folded in half to cut both layers at the same time.

I layered a large egg with four of the largest eggs and three small ones. Note that the #3 egg is used twice.

I added the I2-1002 Butterflies Impressabilities™ template to the top along with the second White Master Mat and embossed in the Wizard™.

Next came my airbrush board (12×12″ lightweight chipboard that I use for airbrushing). I placed the I2-1002 Butterflies Impressabilities™ on top of the layered eggs and placed my Magnetic Spacer Plate underneath to help hold the template in place while airbrushing. I airbrushed small strips of color onto the two eggs.

I layered the eggs using dimensional adhesive. I wanted to add the eggs to a basket but I couldn’t find what I wanted in my house so I cut down a snack box, covered it with coordinating paper and cut S7-004 Illumination Border Grand to use as a handle.

For the final step, I used JustRite Stampers for the stamped sentiments. The round sentiment was cut/embossed with S4-124 Classic Scalloped Circles LG (#1, the center). The “at EASTER”  was cut/embossed with S4-235 Fancy Tags.

I put it all together with my favorite adhesive, added some paper “grass”, a small lotion and nail polish. It’s ready for grandma, my daughter’s teacher or her Sunday School Director. I guess I’ll have to make two more.

Supplies: Wizard™, 2-1002 Butterflies Impressabilities™, S4-264 Nested Eggs, S7-004 Illumination Border Grand, S4-235 Fancy Tags, S4-124 Classic Scalloped Circles LG; My Mind’s Eye Penny Lane Paper; Copic Sketch Markers, B01, YG03, Y13, #95, RV11, R85; JustRite® Stampers, Custom Design Card Making Kit stamp, Times New Roman Font, Horizontal Stamper; Clearsnap ColorBox Chestnut Roan chalk ink; White color copy paper, Lavender dye ink

Thanks for stopping by and remember to come back on the 24th to see all our NEW die template releases (What an amazing collection it is, too!) and something else very special…

Illuminating Impressabilities™

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Very pretty Savvy Saturday Luminary, Margie!

I chose to embellish a pillar candle with a New Year’s theme.  How did 2010 get here so fast?  Wasn’t it just last year we were fussing about Y2K?  Despite all the technology, we can still enjoy the light of a candle. Not just any candle, mind you, an embellished candle!

I started with a pillar candle (Holiday clearance priced!) and removed the plastic wrappers.  I took a piece of white tissue paper that wasn’t wrinkled and embossed it with the I2-1009 Flourish Impressabilities™ in my Wizard™.  I left the Impressabilities™ on the paper and airbrushed it with a black Copic Sketch Marker and my Air Brush System.  I did this three times for three sheets.  I trimmed the top edges with scissors and gently tore the sides with my fingers.

I melted beeswax.  When it was hot I positioned one sheet of tissue paper onto the candle and brushed a layer of beeswax over it.  I slightly overlapped the seams and repeated the process until the candle was covered.

My heat gun and brush helped to melt and spread any wax that was too thick or thin.  Next I took a thick ribbon and cut it to just fit around the candle.  I used some pins to hold it in place, and went around the ribbon with my heat gun to adhere it to the candle.

For the paper images, I cut/embossed a New Year’s themed image from Crafty Secret’s Seasonal Heartwarming Vintage Book with S5-014 Deckled Mega Rectangles SM #3 (with #1 being the smallest).  The black mat behind it is S4-142 Long Classic Rectangles LG #3.  I cut/embossed S3-148 Tags Trio #2 and 3 and stacked them onto the image, and used a black Copic atyou Spica pen to write “2010″.

The little holly is the holly accent from the S5-018 Poinsettia Frame.  I cut/embossed, then applied green ink (used my finger!) through the tiny die template.  I added three red brads and adhered the tag to the image. The image is secured to the candle with wax.

Now, remember to use caution with candles and flames.  Never leave a burning candle unsupervised.  Only apply tissue paper to wide candles that don’t burn/melt the outside layers.

We hope that you’ve had a wonderful Holiday Season!  Stay tuned to this blog for an exciting start to 2010!

Beth

Savvy Saturday~Happy Kwanzaa!!

Saturday, December 26th, 2009

Greetings and Happy Kwanzaa to our friends who are celebrating this holiday which starts today! One symbol that stands strong in my mind is light (the seven candles). With that idea, I tried my hand at creating a luminary.

Taking out my Spellbinders™ S4-142 Long Classic Rectangles LG #4 (#1 being the smallest die template), I2-1007 Impressabilities™ Diamond and Stars, S4-232 Blossom Two #1, #2, #3 & #4 , S4-235 Fancy Tags; and Clearsnap Blackbird Chalk; Core’dination Leprechan cardstock; Fancy Pants With Love Pins; JustRite Stampers Wood Stamper Set & Times New Roman (50pt.) Font Set and The Paper Company red cardstock among other miscellaneous items from my scrap stash. We’re off to create!

To make a base, I scored a 6″x12″ The Paper Company red cardstock into four 2 3/4″ sections and on one end, I scored 1/8″ to adhere the ends together to make the luminary. Using the S4-142 Long Classic Rectangles LG #4, I cut four openings or windows. Note: I used household clear tape (I tapped the tape on my jeans to make it less tacky) to position the rectangle die template on the cardstock. Using vellum I had in my scrap stash, I cut four 5 1/2″x 2 5/8″ panels.

With the I2-1007 Impressabilities™ Diamond and Stars, I inked with Clearsnap Blackbird chalk lightly so that the design would not distract the light behind the vellum. Note: I used printer paper to protect the mats. Repeat this three more times for a total of four letterpressed panels.

The letterpress sandwich is (from bottom to top):
White Master Mat
Printer Paper
I2-1007 Impressabilities™ Diamond and Stars (ink side UP)
Vellum
Printer Paper
Tan Embossing Pad
White Master Mat

I framed each inside panel of the base with wet adhesive and adhered the letterpressed vellum one by one. Make sure to the letterpressed part is facing outside.

Using the main colors of Kwanzaa (green, red and black), I cut/embossed S4-235 Fancy Tags and S4-232 Blossom Two #1, #2, #3 & #4 with a combination of Core’dinations Leprechan green cardstock, The Paper Company red cardstock and black cardstock from my scrap stash. I cut/embossed the S4-232 Blossom Two #1, #2, #3 & #4 in a nested position and did this three times for each color (green, red and black). I used each piece in a different color combination. For more details on the cutting/embossing of a nested die template, please click HERE.

Adhere the S4-232 Blossom Two flowers by using wet adhesive on each point and by shifting the flower a little, you will get a beautiful effect. Create three different flowers for each side. One side will be used for the “Happy Kwanzaa” greeting using the S4-235 Fancy Tags.

Stencil with Clearsnap Blackbird Chalk using the S4-235 Fancy Tags die template. With JustRite Stampers Horizontal Wood Stamper Set and Times New Roman (50pt.) Font Set, stamp the words “Happy Kwanzaa.” Determine which side will be your front panel and adhere the stamped tag. Then adhere the S4-232 Blossom Two flowers on each panel and embellish. I used some stick pins I had which also included some Fancy Pants With Love Pins. To finish, adhere the edges together and add a flameless tea light…

HAPPY KWANZAA!!
Happy Savvy Saturday!!

Tagged Again…

Thursday, December 17th, 2009

I learn something “new” from Eli’s post about tagging back ~ LOL! So as a “tag back,” I will go from the three dimensionals of the S4-219 Nested Poinsettias set (which I love by the way!) to the S4-220 Nested Pine Trees set…another limited edition.

Spellbinders™ supplies: Premium Craft Foil (gold, green, red & blue), I2-1010 Impressabilities™ Pebbles, S5-019 Labels Eight #6, S4-221 Poinsettia and Stars Borderabilities® Petite Poinsettia Border, S4-113 Classic Scalloped Ovals LG #3, S4-220 Nested Pine Trees #3, S4-092 Stars Five #1 and S5-018 Poinsettia Frame Ornament Die Template. Miscellanous supplies: Core’dinations, Cosmo Cricket; Flower Soft; Sparkle N Sprinkle; Taylored Expressions; Tattered Angels; JustRite Stampers; Clearsnaps; Copic; and The Paper Company.

Starting with the tag base, we will cut/emboss Cosmo Cricket Jolly By Golly Merry Berry paper with the S5-019 Labels Eight #6 (#1 being the center die template). Also with Core’dination Scarlet cardstock, we will cut/emboss the S4-221 Poinsettia and Stars Borderabilities® Petite Poinsettia border.

With the S5-019 Labels Eight die cut, ink the edges with Clearsnap Colorbox Fluid Chalk Chestnut Roan and set aside.

Taking the S4-221 Poinsettia and Stars Borderabilities® Petite Poinsettia Border, sand the embossed area and adhere to one of the short side of the S5-019 Labels Eight die cut. Then trim to the shape of the label and sand the trimmed edge to give it a smooth finish.

Using Tattered Angels Vintage Pink Glimmer Mist, mist the tag lightly. Set aside to dry or use heating tool to speed up the drying process.

Next cut S4-220 Nested Pine Trees #3 with The Paper Company Green Shimmer cardstock and emboss with I2-1010 Impressabilities™ Pebbles. Repeat this two more times to make a total of three (3) tree die cuts. Sandwiches are:

Cut Sandwich (from bottom to top):
White Master Mat
Magnetic Spacer Plate
S4-220 Nested Pine Trees #3 (cut ridges UP)
Cardstock
White Master Mat

Embossing Sandwich (from bottom to top):
White Master Mat
I2-1010 Impressabilities™ Pebbles
S4-220 Nested Pine Trees #3 (cut ridges UP) with cardstock inside
Tan Embossing Pad
White Master Mat

Score all three tree die cuts in the middle, fold with the front inside the fold and adhere each side back-to-back as shown. For more detailed information, please click HERE.

Using wet adhesive, edge each sides of the tree die cut with Flower Soft Shamrock Green (load up on the Flower Soft over the wet adhesive, give it a moment and then shake off the excess). Set aside to dry completely.

.

When it is completely dry, take the tiny rhinestones from Taylored Expressions and adhere a few combinations of color to the sides of the tree die cuts. A tip: I placed a small dot of wet adhesive on the die cut, drop the rhinestone on the die cut and slid it to the dot with a stylus. Done! Let dry.

Using Spellbinders Premium Craft Foil, cut/emboss the ornament die template in the S5-018 Poinsettia Frame (cut/embossed one each of the red, green and blue colors) and S4-092 Stars Five #1 (in gold). In my stash, I had a green and blue brad that matched the ornament die cuts but didn’t have a red. Using the Copic Sketch R35 Coral, color a white brad. To get a deeper color, color a couple of coats but make sure to dry between coats to get an even coloring.

Stamp with JustRite Stampers Christmas Joy Borders and Centers Oval Set with Clearsnap Queue Ink. Cut/Emboss the image with S4-113 Classic Scalloped Ovals LG #3. Color the image with Copic Sketch Markers (R35 Coral, G28 Ocean Green and YG63 Pea Green) and add some sparkly red glitter from Sparkle N Sprinkle Fire Engine Red Glitter to accent. Let dry.

Once everything is dry (tree and stamped oval), adhere all as shown in the picture of the final project.  At the bottom edge of the tag, mark the placement of the ornaments, poke a hole with a paper piecer and insert the brads/ornaments. Take approx. 8″ of red shiny cord, loop and knot at the end. Adhere the knotted cord to the back with dot adhesive and acid-free tape for extra security.

Here’s another look of the final project!

Hope you enjoyed our Tag Banter! Anyone for a Game of Dodgeball?!
