Impressing Thanks!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Back to school is the perfect time of year to send a note thanking teachers for how they impact the world. Your son or daughter’s teachers will know how you support them and that all their hard work is appreciated when this card comes their way.

Today, I want to share a quick and easy technique using Spellbindersâ„¢’ Impressabilitiesâ„¢…this time let’s emboss craft foil and then sand it for more impact. You can see the effect in the card below.
If you are not familiar with craft foil, it is basically a light weight metal sheet that can be used in all kinds of crafting projects. The Wizardâ„¢ especially loves to cut and emboss these shiny sheets. Spellbinders’ offers several colors in rolls, 12″x36″ and a 12-piece assortment pack with 5″x5″ sheets.

Because of its strength and pliability, craft foil, aka tooling foil, takes embossing perfectly and holds its shape beautifully. So let’s get started making this card to honor a teacher in your life.

Besides your Wizardâ„¢ and mats, gather the following supplies: I2-1002 Impressabilitiesâ„¢ Butterfly, Premium Craft Foil, Spellbinders S5-014 Small Deckled Mega Rectangles, Whimsical patterned paper by Fancy Pants, Gold cardstock by Core’dinations, Glue Dots adhesives, Checked ribbon by Creative Impressions, 25 pt Brayton font by JustRite Stampers, Sandpaper and Corner rounder punch

Begin by cutting three pieces of craft foil to 1-1/4″ by 4″. I used two colors but three coordinating ones could also be fun.

Build your sandwich for embossing:

  • White master mat
  • Impressabilities template
  • Craft foil pieces, side by side
  • Embossing pad
  • White master mat

Lay the three craft foil sheets carefully on the template with the silver facing up.

Feed the sandwich through the Wizardâ„¢ to emboss. Check the photo below to see how crisp the embossing is. Take patience when removing the foil as it tends to grab the metal pieces of the template.

Flip the strips over to the colored side. Add a little wow by sanding each strip to remove the color and really show off the details in the silver. I like to vary the direction that I sand to get an overall effect but you can sand in one direction to get another cool look.

Stamp the beginning of your sentiment with JustRite stamps. I used the quote, “A Teacher affects eternity…she never knows where her influence stops” with the second half of the quote on the inside of the card.

Cut/emboss the stamped portion of the sentiment with S5-014 Small Deckled Mega Rectangles (#2).

Construct the card:
Cut the Fancy Pants paper to 6″x9″ and fold in half. Round the corners. Cut a cardstock square to 4-1/2″x4-1/2″. Add the three metal strips and then the small bow. Attach the card front sentiment with dimensional. Write out the rest of the sentiment and add it to the inside.

Now: sign it, put it in an envelope, address it, drop it in the mail and make a teacher very happy.

Don’t forget to go over to “When Creativity Knocks!” - and vote for Impressabilities in the Great Crafter’s Tool Hunt…you could win something cool and we would win ultimate fame and glory (maybe even a trophy? who knows). Follow this link for more info: HERE

Eli, who is really glad to be back with the team after taking the summer off for some family time.

Savvy Saturday~ Embossed Pendant Card

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Today we’re getting back into our Savvy Saturday mode, and what better to do that with than a card boasting our newest die templates!

This card features the S5-019 Labels Eight, S4-210 Lattice Pendant,  S4-110 Classic Oval Large,  S4-112 Classic Oval Small, and S4-234 Ribbons Tag Trio 2 die templates, I2-1002 Impressabilities™ Butterfly, as well as F-005 Gold Premium Craft Foil, 7gypsies patterned paper, Clearsnap ink and Hero Arts stamps.

I started by cutting/embossing black cardstock with the largest (#6) of the Labels Eight die templates.  Then I cut a piece of Gold Premium Craft Foil with  the S5-019 Labels Eight (#5) die template.  To get the finished border around the Labels Eight die cut, as well as the I2-002 Impressabilities™ Butterfly embossing, I used this sandwich:

  • White Master Mat
  • Impressabilitiesâ„¢ Butterfly
  • Labels Eight die template, cut side facing up
  • Die cut of Gold Premium Craft Foil, gold side down, fit into Label die template
  • Tan Embossing Pad
  • White Master Mat

By feeding it into my Wizard™, it resulted in an embossed die cut!  With a piece of fine sandpaper, I sanded the top of the die cut to reveal the silver color.  I adhered it onto the black die cut.

Next, I cut/embossed a black oval from S4-110 Classic Oval Large (#5).  Then I cut a Gold Foil Oval from the S4-112 Classic Ovals Small (#5).  Using the same sandwich as above, but I replaced the Impressabilities™ with the Center piece from the the 4-210 Lattice Pendant. I fed it into my Wizard™ and the shape of the Center embossed into my gold foil oval.  Again I sanded the detail for more definition.

I trimmed the 7gypsies patterned paper 6×4.5″ so that it made a nice  background for the Labels Eight die cuts, which are big, measuring at nearly 5.5″ long!

I also cut/embossed the Long Rectangle Tag from the S4-234 Ribbon Tag Trio 2 set.  I used the the back side of the 7gypsies pattern paper.  Then I stamped a sentiment on it from Hero Arts, distressed with Clearsnap Black pigment ink and set aside.

I arranged and adhered the Labels Eight and Classic Oval die cuts on top of the 7gypsies patterned paper as shown.  I mounted the patterned paper onto a piece of black cardstock.  Taking the stamped Ribbon Tag Trio 2 die cut, I strung a 1 3/8″ wide ribbon (the openings are 3/4″, allowing for thicker ribbon!) and wrapped it around the front of the card, and adhered it to the back side of the black cardstock.

Here are a few more examples from our fabulous Design Team:

Holly Simoni’s layout features her daughter and her love of horses.  Holly used S4-215 Renaissance Hearts Borderabilities®, S4-206 Renaissance Hearts Pendant and S5-018 Labels Eight.  Her supplies include 7gypsies pattern paper, Clearsnap ink, and Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L.

Christy Farneth-Kerr’s card is Magically Delicious!  She cut an opening in the front with the S4-189 Labels Three,  and covered it with S4-207 Kaliedoscope Pendant.  She used the S4-216 Kaliedoscope Borderabilities® cut from Premium Craft Foil and from cardstock to make the other elements.  Christy folded a Pendant to make the iris flower element.  Other supplies include Chatterbox paper, The Paper Company paper, and Flower Soft adhesive.

Kimberly Crawford employed reverse stenciling to get the 2-toned effect on this S4-206 Renaissance Hearts Pendant card.  She added Clearsnap’s Smooch to the small heart accents.  Kimberly used My Mind’s Eye paper, Clearsnap ink, Hero Arts stamps, and Scrapbook Adhesives by 3L supplies.

So if these Pendant ideas get your mojo flowing, be sure to enter the Pendant Party, and you could win some fabulous prizes!

Happy Saturday!

Embossing: Foiled Again!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

When I read Beth’s Savvy Saturday post on embossing…well, you know I had to play with foil and not just any foil! I love the colors that Spellbindersâ„¢ offers in their Premium Craft Foil products. So time to play with the Wizardâ„¢ and emboss some foil!

Today, I am using F-003 Blue Premium Craft Foil and some metal words - I know some of you have these metal word embellishments around. You can use them over and over again when you emboss them. It’s a great way to accent your layouts, cards or mixed media projects. The best part, it saves you money!

Since this is graduation season, we had two in our household! I created a layout celebrating my youngest’s sixth grade ceremony. The words I had fit the occasion so I embossed them with the Blue Premium Craft Foil (blue is their school color) and then sanded them to show more detail. I cut/embossed fonts in foil because I love the look! Then I added the S7-013 Heirloom Scroll Borderabilities® Grand Die Template to accent the bottom and give weight to the layout. Using pattern paper from My Mind’s Eye 29th Market Collection and cardstock from Core’dinations ColorCore Line, I edged the papers with Clearsnap Colorbox Fluid Chalk Ink Chestnut Roan. Everything seemed to come together to make a memorable layout for graduation!

Happy embossing and for those of you who are graduating this year…Happy Graduation and Congratulations!!

Savvy Saturday ~ Embossing Premuim Craft Foil

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

I made this card in anticipation of Fathers Day, which is, by the way June 21 - no panic, its not tomorrow!  My dad is a hands on, fix it even if its not broken kind of guy. I think he’ll appreciate this one.

I have a little collection of odds and ends which includes, but is not limited to punchinella ribbon, textured ribbon, window screen and wire mesh.  While all of these items will emboss into paper, I want to show you how wonderfully these emboss into Spellbinders Premium Craft Foil.

First I grabbed a few things, including my Wizard, S4-130 Classic Rectangle Small #s 2 & 3, and S4-162 Labels Two #s 2 & 3, Premium Craft Foil in blue, Core’dinations Color Core Cardstock, Clearsnap Colorbox Fluid Chalk Ink and my treasures for embossing.  I also used a font cut from of chipboard.  You can use any font or sticker you might have.

I cut/embossed 4 rectangles of the black Core’dinations cardstock with the S4-130 Classic Rectangle Small #3 die template.  I sanded the embossed edges to show the gray core.  Then I cut 4 the S4-130 Classic Rectangle Small #2 from Spellbinders Premium Craft Foil.  I cut 2 with the silver side up, and 2 with the blue side up.  I embossed each foil square with a different treasure, I mean texture.

I placed a sheet of scratch paper on my Master Mat, to act as a clean flat surface (so existing cut lines didn’t emboss into the foil), placed the texture next, then the die template with cut side up, and then the foil die cut right back into the die template, with the “front” side facing the texture.  Cover with the Tan Embossing Pad and pass through the Wizard.  Sand the blue foil for more contrast.

For the center piece, I cut/embossed the S4-162 Labels Two #3 with the same Core’dinations cardstock.  I cut the smaller label with Spellbinders Premium Craft Foil.  To emboss the word “Dad” into the die cut, I arranged my letters in reverse on the mat as shown below.  I carefully aligned the metal die cut back into the die template and passed the sandwich through my Wizard.

I assembled the rectangles and labels onto a white cardstock card and ran a Charcoal colored Clearsnap Colorbox Fluid Chalk Ink Pad along the edges.

Just remember, if you borrow some of dad’s treasures, put them back!

Savvy Saturday ~ Baby Boy Card

Saturday, May 16th, 2009

My inspiration for this Savvy Saturday was two-fold. My friend Kim was blessed with her first grandchild last weekend, a baby boy! I know a thing or two about baby boys, I have two of them myself.  I know how easy it is for grandparents to scoop them up and, well, give them back when it’s time.  My other inspiration is the S4-174 Deckle Scalloped Edge Petite Border. It has that certain “I don’t know who ripped it, Mom!” look to it. Mothers of boys, you know what I’m talking about!

To start, I gathered my supplies.

It’s so easy to use the Petite Borders. Looking at the die template, one side has the raised ridge, which is the cutting edge, and the other does not. That is the embossing edge.

Simply align the cutting edge where you want to cut, with the cut side down, facing the front of the card, and secure in place with some household tape. I touch the tape to my jeans to lessen the tackiness of the tape.

If I don’t want to cut through both layers of the card, I have to invert the fold of the card and insert the Spacer Plate inside of the card. Now the cutting edge of the die is facing up, and only one layer of the card will be cut.

To emboss this card, remove the Spacer Plate and place the Tan Embossing Pad on top of the card, and feed it into your Wizard. To enhance the embossed areas, I used a sanding block on this Core’dinations cardstock.

For the rest of the card I cut/embossed the S4-129 Classic Scalloped Squares Small, S4-197 Small Classic Inverted Scalloped Squares, and the S4-128 Classic Squares Small. The little boy embellishment was made from piecing together different colored die cuts from Cordinations with S3-014 Baby Boy, and a small scrap of Premium Craft Foil.

I placed a square die cut on the inside of the card with a stamped sentiment from Hero Arts, using Clearsnap Colorbox ink.

This is the finished card, ready for the mail!  Now if I could just find those stamps…

Happy Saturday!

Savvy Saturday: Impressabilities™!

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Spellbindersâ„¢ Impressabilitiesâ„¢ is a new embossing tool to use with the Spellbindersâ„¢ Wizardâ„¢.   Spellbindersâ„¢ Impressabilitiesâ„¢ templates are made for embossing, debossing, embellishing and more. The templates measure 4.5 x 5.75″, and are made of thin metal. Spellbindersâ„¢ Impressabilitiesâ„¢ emboss in the Wizardâ„¢ using the same sandwich you would use to emboss Spellbindersâ„¢ Die Templates, which is:

White Master Mat
Impressabilities Template
Paper or other material to emboss
Tan Embossing Mat
White Master Mat

Design Team Member Holly Craft had a chance to play with the Impressabilities™ and is sharing her artwork  today. Shown above is the poster she made for the CHA Innovations display. Lets delve deeper into the artwork.

On this card, the dark blue background is embossed with Spellbindersâ„¢ I2-1002 Impressabilitiesâ„¢ Butterfly onto velvet paper. The focal point square is embossed and letter pressed, then Holly added butterflies that she cut from the unused portion of the paper. To achieve the inked look, first apply ink to the Impressabilities template. Then build your sandwich as listed above, with the inked template facing the paper. This will apply ink to the debossed areas of the paper. Then, while the ink is still wet on the template, put another piece of paper in the sandwich and run it through the Wizardâ„¢ again. You will get the same embossing result, but a lighter, second generation inking. Use this for matting.

On this card Holly embossed the Spellbindersâ„¢ Impressabilities Paisley template into craft foil, and sanded the embossed areas of the foil. Then when Holly cut/embossed the Classic Heart die template, the original embossing flattens out, but still leaves the beautiful pattern.

This card employs two techniques with ink and Impressabilities Snowflake.  The background of the card is letter pressed, as explained above.  The square mounted on the scalloped die cut is embossed.  Then when Holly took the sandwich out of the Wizard she flipped it over, took off the White Master Mat and applied ink to the paper thru the Impressabilities template, just like you would with a stencil.  So yes, you could ink the template from either side for 2 different effects!

On this card, Holly first embossed the Flower Impressabilities template onto Core’dinations cardstock, then sanded it to reveal the colored core.  Then she airbrushed Copic markers onto a piece of Premium Craft Foil, cut/embossed it, and then sanded off the embossed areas of the metal die cuts.

This last card requires an extra tan embossing mat.  Holly used a circle cutter to cut this mat.

Instead of using the entire embossing mat, Holly only used the cut-out circle on the part she wanted embossed.  Holly calls this selective embossing.  She placed the Spellbinders’ Impressabilities template on the White Master Mat, placed her paper on top of it, then the circle, then the White Master Mat and fed the sandwich into the Wizard.  Just the section covered by the the tan circle embossed!  Additional tan embossing mats are available for purchase if you want to experiment with this technique.

Thank you Holly for starring in today’s Savvy Saturday!

Spellbinders’ Impressabilities will be shipping to your favorite Spellbinders’ retailer the first week of March.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Savvy Saturday~ Borderabilities Grand Borders

Saturday, December 13th, 2008

Spellbinders introduced Borderabilites Grand Borders this past summer. The Grand Borders are wonderful fun for scrapbookers and everyone else too! Grand Borders measure true 12″ long. They come in designs that coordinate with the Rose, Daisy and Wisteria Edgeabilities Die Template styles, and one with the Symbology Die Template. You may have seen this tutorial I did for the summer reveal, but it deserves another run now that you have the borders in your stash, along with some fresh artwork at the end.
I am using Spellbinders Premium Craft Foil, which is 12 inches wide  It doesn’t matter which color I use, because I want the silver side. It comes in 5 colors plus pure copper, each color has silver on the back, except the pure copper. I used a tag from the Ribbon Tags Trio and the Daisy Patch Edgability Die Template. The paper is Worldwin’s ColorMates in Deep Awesome Aqua, Deep Totally Tan, Light Heritage White, and Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum, and black acrylic paint. Note that this technique works on foil as well as paper. Die cutting and embossing a 12 inch long die template on standard mats is easy. Use the standard Spellbinders Die Template sandwich, when stacked from your table up: white master mat, white spacer plate, die, cut side up, material to be cut, white master mat. A little tip, if you are concerned your material will move off the die, you can use a small piece of removable tape. It won’t harm the die, and it peels off the paper easily without damaging the die cut.

Feed this into your Wizard. With a 12 inch long die, part of the die will stick out the back end, and that is fine. Only the part of the die that sits on the Spacer Plate will cut, but it won’t leave a line or crease where the spacer plate ends.

After the first pass, lift the top mat, turn the border die 180 degrees so the uncut portion is on the spacer plate, replace the top mat and feed it in exactly the same way as before. You can remove the excess cut foil from the outside of the die.

Embossing is done the same way. Leave the die cut in the die. Remove the spacer plate from the sandwich so the die sits on the bottom mat, place the tan embossing mat on top of the die, and cover with the top white mat. Feed the embossing sandwich through the Wizard. To emboss the other half, turn the die 180 degrees, cover with the Tan mat and white mat and feed sandwich again.

For my layout, I painted the entire die cut with black acrylic craft paint. Paint it evenly, and be sure to get paint into all the nooks and crannies. Let it dry slightly. With a dry paper towel, wipe the paint off the embossed areas. Be gentle, but you don’t have to be perfect. Do not wipe the paint out of the crevices. You can always add more a little more paint if you took too much off and you can always take a little more off if you put too much on.

I assembled my layout with photos and a poem.

Joy!

Friday, December 12th, 2008

A day filled with running the kids to and from school, meeting a fellow volunteer for coffee to go over the next steps in the big project, getting the snow tires put on the car, paying a few bills, shopping online for Christmas gifts, making sure is enough wrapping paper for the approaching holiday, writing out a few end of the year greetings…and the list goes on…a jam-packed schedule can sometimes take the joy out of celebrating a season of giving, of peace and of miracles.

Today, I am sharing with you four cards announcing that simple state of being that runs deep: JOY!

Three members of our Design Team created cards that express this simple word. Through the loveliness and grace of these projects, may we all be inspired to live into and pass on the sentiment that it brings.

Jennifer Ellefson begins our fashion show today with a vintage take on the subject. Featuring our Christmas Stocking, she gave it a well-loved look by using metallic rub-ons. The ruched paper by WorldWin also adds to the age-old appeal.

Spellbindersâ„¢ Supplies: S3-142 Festive Stockings, S3-147 Labels Trio, S4-145 Long Classic Scalloped Rectangles (S4-145)

Other Supplies: Ruched papers (WorldWin), Patterned paper, lace, sentiments stamp, metallic rub-ons

Next: Beth Pingry (our other blogger, extraordinaire) created this place card for a friend but it seems to translate well into a great card for the season too.

Spellbindersâ„¢ Supplies:
S3-141 Stars, S4-139 Double Ended Tags (smallest), S3-142 Long Classic Rectangles, Large (2 largest dies), L1-01 Caesar Font (retired), F-005 Gold Premium Craft Foil

Other Supplies: ColorMates Bright Heritage White and Deep Heritage Black paper (WorldWin), Fabri-tac adhesive (Beacon), Clearsnap ColorBox Chianti ink, Brads (Creative Impressions), red patterned paper, sticker maker

Third in line is another of Beth’s cards. I love the subtle print on the coordinating papers and the repeated image of the Labels 2 Die Template. Sublime.

Spellbindersâ„¢ Supplies: S4-162 Labels 2, S3-138 Ribbons & Bells (retired), L2-09 Julius Font

Other Supplies: ColorMates Medium Outdoor Olive and Mirri Cast Gold papers (WorldWin), ColorBox Creamy Brown fluid chalk ink (Clearsnap), Pop-up Glue Dots, patterned papers, memory glue

And Finally: Cathy Chlebana offers us an elegant window card. By cutting out a window from the card front, Cathy’s sentiment is actually adhered to the inside of the card and so it remains visible when the card is opened. This is a nice surprise for the recipient.
