Floral Impressabilities Card

Tuesday, June 15th, 2010

Spellbinders ™ Impressabilities ™  and F-004 Copper Premium Craft Foil are two of my favorite supplies. I decided to use them together, along with Flower Pounding to create my card.

If you haven’t read Margie’s post on Impressabilities, check it out!  She covered some great techniques as well!

Supplies include: S5-019 Labels Eight, S5-023 Mega Ovals Large, F-004 Copper Premium Craft Foil; The Robin’s Nest Teardrops; Worldwin White Shimmer Paper; Flourishes stamp set; SCRAPBOOK ADHESIVES By 3L Foam Adhesive squares; watercolor paper; white ribbon and your favorite pansy blossoms.

There are a few different ways to do Flower Pounding with the Wizard ™.  Beth did a great tutorial  using a variety of flowers you can check out here.  I like to use watercolor paper, a variety of sizes of pansy blossoms, and a paper towel.

I used the basic embossing sandwich, but added 2 items:

  • White Master Mat
  • watercolor paper
  • pansy blossoms
  • Tan Embossing Mat
  • paper towel folded to the width of the Master Mats
  • White Master Mat

 Feed through the Wizard.

I like to let the blossoms rest on the watercolor paper for about a minute to really let the pigment from the flower soak into the paper. Next, pull off the flower blossoms. You might have to roll them with your finger a bit to get them to come off.

Cut/emboss S5-019 Labels Eight size #3 (#1 being the smallest) out of the blossom printed watercolor paper.  Cut/emboss S5-019 Labels Eight  #4 out of white cardstock as well, for the base of the card.

I used F-004 Copper Premium Craft Foil, which is Copper colored on one side, and Silver on the other side. For this card I placed the Copper side down onto the S5-019 Labels Eight die template and cut only.

Next, I embossed the I2-1014 Fluer De Lis Pattern Impressability by using the following sandwich:

Notice that gorgeous edge you get by leaving the die cut in the die template and using the Impressability to emboss it? Isn’t if beautiful?

Sand the copper die cut. Notice the silver begins to show through.

Use the same technique to alter the F-004 Copper Premium Craft Foil, and cut/emboss S5-023 Mega Ovals Large #2 and #3 to create a frame.

Cut/emboss Mega Ovals #1 out of white cardstock.

Layer and adhere die cuts as shown. Stamp sentiment on white oval die cut and adhere with foam squares for added dimension. Adhere ribbon and teardrops.

Don’t forget about JustRite Stampers’ Friday Challenge! Not only is Spellbinders sponsoring this time around, it’s all about being creative with your favorite SUMMERTIME recipe.  Here are the DETAILS - you have until Thursday, June 17th at 9:00am U.S. Central Standard Time to submit. Good Luck!

Silly Summer Fun

Thursday, April 8th, 2010

Some of my most memorable moments of summer were the days spent at Boysen Lake.  I created this Summer Fun photo frame to go with a photograph I captured of my sister Diana catching some big air while knee boarding!

The end of the post will show a slightly different version of this frame to show how versatile these Limited Edition dies can be!

To create my altered frame I used Spellbindersâ„¢ Wizardâ„¢, S4-272 Surf’s Up, S4-190 Labels Four #3, #4 (with #1 being the smallest),  and I2-1016 SeaScape Impressabilitiesâ„¢.  I also gathered my Cosmo Cricket  patterned paper, Core’dinations Cardstock, Clearsnap, Colorbox Prussian Blue Fluid Chalk Ink, Copic atyou Spica black pen, JustRite Stampers Brayton Font in 50pt., Horizontal Stamp Block; a brayer; craft knife; sandpaper; metal ruler and water misting sprayer.

I purchased a frame from my local discount store, and traced it on the backside of my patterned paper. Then, I used my ruler and cut the paper with a craft knife.

A foam brush works great to apply a thin layer of water based liquid glue to the frame, then work out the air bubbles with a brayer.  Let the frame dry approximately 30 minutes.

The S4-272 Surf’s Up  die is one of my favorite’s!  It’s so versatile for many different summer projects.  There are endless ways to use the Surfboard die template!  For this project I cut/embossed Color core Cardstock by Core’dinations and sanded the die cut for a weathered look.  Two more Surfboards were cut/embossed out of yellow and blue Cosmo Cricket patterned paper as shown in the project picture.

I wanted create more embossed detail and dimension, but still have a nice clean line.  I started, by only cutting the Umbrella from S4-272 Surf’s Up die template and the S4-190 Labels Four #4.

I lightly misted the die cuts and placed them, still in the die templates, on top of the I2-1016 SeaScape Impressabilities and ran it throgh my Wizard using the embossing sandwich.

The above photo shows how the dies will look after they are embossed.  The I2-1016 SeaScape Impressabilities leaves such gorgeous detailing!

This photo shows how the embossed areas really pop after sanding them a bit.  Leaving the die cut in the die template also gives you a beautiful clean line around the embossed areas of each die cut.

Bright yellow Cosmo Cricket patterned paper really show the details of the cut/embossed Flip Flops.  The die was used as a stencil, and applying the Copic atyou Spica black pen creates glittery details.

JustRite stamps are perfect for stamping titles on your projects.  Here I used Brayton Font at 50pt, and centered my title on my JustRite horizontal stamp block.

I wanted to create the look of blue splashing water around my title, so I applied Prussian Blue Fluid Chalk Ink directly to the paper.

To complete the project I layered and adhered the dies as shown, and applied some bling to coordinate with the shimmering water.

I created a similar frame, using all the same techniques, but a different picture and saying.  This one is of me and my daughter Arianna.  We are so much alike and it was a fitting quote.

Here are some more fun projects showing Spellbinders fabulous Limited Edition dies!

Borderabilities® Grand: Scrapbookers’ paradise

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Borderabilities® Grand, what a wonderful product from Spellbinders, especially for scrapbookers. Where else can you get 12-inch border die templates with incredible detailing featuring three functions: cutting, embossing and stenciling? (If that weren’t rhetorical, I’d say, “Nowhere!”) Today, I’m going to share a layout with you. But first, you might want to watch our very own Stacey Caron demonstrate the Borderabilities Grand in the Wizard. Check out this video below. She cuts/embosses the Grand Borderabilities with the accessory Grand Cut Mat Kit for efficient cut/emboss functions, and she shows the Extended White Master Mats that are included with a Wizardâ„¢.

Impressing Thanks!

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Back to school is the perfect time of year to send a note thanking teachers for how they impact the world. Your son or daughter’s teachers will know how you support them and that all their hard work is appreciated when this card comes their way.

Today, I want to share a quick and easy technique using Spellbindersâ„¢’ Impressabilitiesâ„¢…this time let’s emboss craft foil and then sand it for more impact. You can see the effect in the card below.
If you are not familiar with craft foil, it is basically a light weight metal sheet that can be used in all kinds of crafting projects. The Wizardâ„¢ especially loves to cut and emboss these shiny sheets. Spellbinders’ offers several colors in rolls, 12″x36″ and a 12-piece assortment pack with 5″x5″ sheets.

Because of its strength and pliability, craft foil, aka tooling foil, takes embossing perfectly and holds its shape beautifully. So let’s get started making this card to honor a teacher in your life.

Besides your Wizardâ„¢ and mats, gather the following supplies: I2-1002 Impressabilitiesâ„¢ Butterfly, Premium Craft Foil, Spellbinders S5-014 Small Deckled Mega Rectangles, Whimsical patterned paper by Fancy Pants, Gold cardstock by Core’dinations, Glue Dots adhesives, Checked ribbon by Creative Impressions, 25 pt Brayton font by JustRite Stampers, Sandpaper and Corner rounder punch

Begin by cutting three pieces of craft foil to 1-1/4″ by 4″. I used two colors but three coordinating ones could also be fun.

Build your sandwich for embossing:

  • White master mat
  • Impressabilities template
  • Craft foil pieces, side by side
  • Embossing pad
  • White master mat

Lay the three craft foil sheets carefully on the template with the silver facing up.

Feed the sandwich through the Wizardâ„¢ to emboss. Check the photo below to see how crisp the embossing is. Take patience when removing the foil as it tends to grab the metal pieces of the template.

Flip the strips over to the colored side. Add a little wow by sanding each strip to remove the color and really show off the details in the silver. I like to vary the direction that I sand to get an overall effect but you can sand in one direction to get another cool look.

Stamp the beginning of your sentiment with JustRite stamps. I used the quote, “A Teacher affects eternity…she never knows where her influence stops” with the second half of the quote on the inside of the card.

Cut/emboss the stamped portion of the sentiment with S5-014 Small Deckled Mega Rectangles (#2).

Construct the card:
Cut the Fancy Pants paper to 6″x9″ and fold in half. Round the corners. Cut a cardstock square to 4-1/2″x4-1/2″. Add the three metal strips and then the small bow. Attach the card front sentiment with dimensional. Write out the rest of the sentiment and add it to the inside.

Now: sign it, put it in an envelope, address it, drop it in the mail and make a teacher very happy.

Don’t forget to go over to “When Creativity Knocks!” - and vote for Impressabilities in the Great Crafter’s Tool Hunt…you could win something cool and we would win ultimate fame and glory (maybe even a trophy? who knows). Follow this link for more info: HERE

Eli, who is really glad to be back with the team after taking the summer off for some family time.

Savvy Saturday: Bright Eyes

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Good afternoon, friends.  I’ve been decorating for the 5th Anniversary Blog Party, rushing about here and there, making sure we’re all ready for the 16-day blast! …Ooh, la, la. I think Spellbindersâ„¢ sure knows how to throw a good party.

For today’s Savvy Saturday, I want to share a layout I fell in love with the moment I saw it. Design Team Member Jeni Calkins created it. It features a couple of our Sunflower dies and even though it looks super challenging, it is actually do-able for most levels of scrapbookers. So, now that you’ve seen it…let’s learn how to do it.

Instructions:

  1. Cut/emboss the following die templates from dark purple Cor’dinations cardstock: Daisy Grand Borderabilities® (S7-003), Sunflower Garden Edgeabilities® (S5-004). From the Sunflower Sets One and Two (S4-157, S4-157) cut one large, two mediums and two small sunflowers.
  2. Sand the embossing details on all the die cuts to bring out the white core.
  3. Cut the frame off of the Sunflower Garden. Layer the sunflowers as seen in the image. Curl the petals to give them dimension. Using a fingernail underneath to scrape the paper a bit can help it keep it’s curl. Sort of like when you use scissors on curling ribbon, just a bit more gently.
  4. Trim a piece of cardboard to approximately 10×10″ and peel off the top covering to reveal the ribbing.
  5. Rub the cardboard randomly with embossing ink, sprinkle with two shades of embossing powder and heat to set.
  6. Use photo editing software to turn a photo to black and white and to soften the outer edge. Print, tear and ink around the outer edge.
  7. Assemble the layout as shown and add the title using old game letters and metal letters for each word.

Voila!

Stunning work. It looks so beautiful and complicated yet it is achievable.

Thanks to Jeni Calkins for sharing her talents with us.

Cheers to the New Year: Eli
