Scrapbook Die Cutters
The card making world has long recognized the benefits of using die cuts to embellish cards but somewhere in the scrapbooking realm the rewards seem lost to stickers, rub-ons and fibers, to name a few. Well, if you’re a scrapbooker, you might want to rethink this a bit. The desire to create elements quickly, in a detailed, elegant fashion, can be achieved by using dies and a die cutting machine. With so many incredible designs available, any page theme warrants a look into this flexible medium.
Scrapbook die cutters offers a variety of simple shapes. Dies can be reused again and again, making them more economical than consumables such as stickers or rub-ons. Chalks, inks and other colorants add color and depth to items but real creative freedom is only found with Spellbinders’ Die Templates. The most detailed dies on the market today, they offer the flexibility to cut, emboss and stencil. Choose any one of those features alone or use them all. Scrapbook die cutters adapt to a variety of media but especially scrapbooking. Below, you’ll find a variety of ideas to incorporate into your scrapbook page designs.
Scrapbook Borders
Borders are a staple to the scrapbooking page. They provide a foundation for images and embellishments, titles and journaling. In her Daisy Field layout, Beth Pingry created a back to back image using Spellbinders' Grand Borderabilities™ Die Templates. The border provides an anchor for the layout while her material application - craft foil: cut and embossed, painted and then wiped off from the embossed areas- adds to the look of the delicate flowers.
Supplies—Spellbinders Wizard and Die Templates: Grand Borderabilities Large Daisy (S7-003), Daisy Patch Edgeability (S4-043), Ribbon Tags Trio (S4-043), Premium Craft Foil (F-003); orldwin Papers: ColorMates Deep Awesome Aqua, Deep Totally Tan, Light Heritage White, and Inkjet Printable Translucent Vellum; ScraPerfect Perfect Printing Pouch

Another option, shown in Wendy Weixler’s scrapbook layout, is using a single die cutter several times. This application gives rhythm to the layout, helping the eyes flow through the entire page.

Scrapbook Die cut photos
Probably the most foundational element to any scrapbook page is the photos. Add a scrapbook die cut machine and they can be cut with a variety of shapes with crisp and clean edges. Beth Pingry incorporated a square die cut for this collection featuring her son. She enhances the pics of her Silly Guy by framing each with a white mat.

Scrapbook Embellishments, of course
Scrapbook die cuts provide plenty of opportunities to embellish a page. Use a die cut over and over, giving it a different look every time. The creative possibilities are endless. Large or small, simple or ornate, die cuts are made for embellishing scrapbooking pages. Sally Lynn MacDonald knows how to throw a party for embellishments on her page How Sweet it Is. She used circles and frames, three fonts, flowers, leaves and stems to create a fun and lively page of her daughter’s offering of flowers.

Jeni Caulkins knows how to capitalize on the benefits of scrapbook die cutting as embellishing. Her page, Brothers, came together featuring one fabulous photo and several story-telling journaling boxes. It became art when she added shapes, patterns, colors and more, all made possible by scrapbook die cutting.

Scrapbook Fonts
Scrapbook die cutting letters for titles, journaling or other page elements gives an elegant, professional look to a layout. Combining fonts can bring a whimsical touch as seen in Donya Schroeder’s layout Lucky. By combining two similar fonts in different sizes, she adds a funky feel to a delightful page.

On another note, Beth Pingry designed Metamorphosis as a tribute to many changes her mother faced over a few years. The elegant page needed a more refined title and she accomplished that by embossing the letters and keeping them in a simple line.

Repetition creates flow
A strong technique used in design involves repetition. Using it in scrapbooking can add visual interest and improve design flow. Repetition comes in many forms such as shapes, images, colors, embellishments or even photos. Die cutting can simplify this process immensely. In just a few minutes, Heidi Blankenship created a number of suitcases for the bottom of her layout. The black frames and delicate scallops are an example of more subtle repetition.

In Wendy Weixler’s layout, Spellbinders, a number of repeated images help define the visual sections of the layout, moving the eyes from one place to another. The small blue squares, window panes, stamped white circles and even the vertical fibers, all bring the scarpbook layout together in one visual statement.

Scrapbook Stenciling
What a treat it is to be able to use Spellbinders Die Templates for three functions: cut, emboss and stencil. Stencil? Sure! Use the Template holes or open area as an opportunity to add color, use a pen, air brush, paint, etc. It’s a great way to enhance a scrapbooking page. Check out Sally Lynn MacDonald’s Knock Out page of her daughter in Hulk fists. She stenciled with pens to enhance the scrapbook die cuts. She used a black pen to draw inside all of the Templates and a white pen to enhance the Nestabilities blocks.
