Hello, crafty friends! I’m Adrienne Boese, better known online as Alice Scraps Wonderland. Today I’m sharing 3 different card ideas using the Wonder of Oz collection by Graphic 45. Two of these ideas use the traditional ruby red of the poppies and green of the Emerald City, while the final card finds color inspiration from the Wicked movies, with pink and green as the key colors. And just like there’s a color palette for all tastes in this blog post, there’s a technique for everyone, too! I include die cutting, embossing, hot foiling, and letter pressing ideas - so no matter what your favorite technique is, you are sure to find inspiration here.

Field of Ruby Poppies Card

“The Emerald City is closer and prettier than ever!” For this card, I wanted to focus on the longtime favorite techniques of die cutting and embossing, as well as the ruby red color that was made so famous by the poppies and ruby slippers of the first Wizard of Oz movie.

• Trim a piece of Poppy ColorWheel Cardstock to 4 by 5.25 inches.
• Place your Poppy cardstock in the Field of Poppies 3D embossing folder and run it through your Platinum machine.
• Die cut the Wonder of Oz Silhouette Etched Dies from Raven ColorWheel Cardstock using your Platinum machine. This die is designed for you to choose how much “ground” you want, so I placed my die about three-quarters of an inch from the edge of the cardstock.
• Create your sentiment with the Wonder of Oz Sentiments BetterPress Plate & Die Set:
  • Place the plate on your BetterPress platform.
  • Ink it with the Black BetterPress Ink.
  • Attach an A2 Porcelain Cotton Panel on the top clear piece of your BetterPress platform using craft tape.
  • Then run this through your Platinum machine.
• Die cut the sentiments out with the coordinating die from the BetterPress set.
• Attach your red embossed background to another A2 piece of Porcelain Cotton Panel using your favorite liquid adhesive.
• Attach the die-cut silhouette and the BetterPress sentiment to the card using foam adhesive.
• Pop on a few Aura AB Color Essential Gems.

Tip: Mist your cardstock with a bit of water before embossing it - this helps soften the paper fibers, helping them mould to the embossing folder easier, limiting tearing and wrinkling.

If you want to try out the emboss and cut function, I always have better results cutting first, then lining up the cut with the coordinating part of the embossing folder. You can use a piece of craft tape to help hold it in place while running the folder through your machine. If you emboss then cut, you might see your embossing get slightly smooshed during the cutting process.

Emerald City Card

“We’re off to see the Wizard!” This emerald-hued card finds inspiration in the glimmering Emerald City, using Green Glimmer Foil. I opted for both tone-on-tone and green over white to create an impactful focal point.

• Heat up your Glimmer platform.
• Trim a piece of Fern ColorWheel Cardstock to an A2 size or larger.
• Trim two pieces of Green Glimmer Foil to fit the Wonder of Oz Frame and Tag Better Press Plate.
• Place the Frame and Tag BetterPress Plate onto your Glimmer platform and press the timer button to ensure your plate gets hot enough to foil.
• Lay a piece of green foil over your plate, silver side up, then place your green cardstock on top of that.
• Once your Glimmer platform is ready, run this through your Platinum more slowly than you would for die cutting to get a good foil application.
• Place your platform back into the Glimmer base, then carefully remove your cardstock and peel the foil sheet off to reveal your design.
• Follow this same procedure to foil with the second sheet of green foil on a piece of Porcelain Cotton Panel.
• Trim your green foiled cardstock to just outside the first foiled line around the design—this will make your card front slightly smaller than an A2 card base.
• Attach this green foiled base to a piece an A2 Porcelain Cotton Panel using your favorite adhesive.
• Die-cut the white foiled cardstock using the coordinating tag die.
• Attach the white die cut to the green card background using foam adhesive.
• Pop on a few Aura AB Color Essential Gems.

Tip: Before foiling your cardstock, dust it with some anti-static powder. This will help cut down on over-foiling. And when die cutting a foiled piece, try not to place your craft tape over the foiled areas you want on your card—the tape can peel some of your foil off when you remove the tape.

Good Witch, Bad Witch Card

“Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?” This card holds a special place in my heart. As a pre-teen, one of my best friends and I were in a production of The Wizard of Oz. She played the Wicked Witch of the West, while I was Glinda the Good.  But even though the iconography is from the classic illustrations, it finds inspiration from the latest Wicked movie color palette of pink and green. I also put the focus on letter pressing for this card.

• Place both Witches plates from the Dorthy & the Witches BetterPress Plate & Die set on your BetterPress platform and ink them up using Black BetterPress Ink.
• Place a piece of A2 Porcelain Cotton Panel onto the top clear part of your BetterPress with craft tape and run your BetterPress through your Platinum machine.
• Watercolor your Witches using Distress Inks in Kitsch Flamingo, Mowed Lawn, Black Soot, and Pumice Stone:
  • Squish a bit of ink out onto your glass or silicone work surface.
  • Dip a wet Round #8 brush into the ink.
  • Color your Witches with the watery ink—to get lighter colors, use more water; for darker colors, use less water.
  • Optional: add a little shimmer to Glinda with a clear glitter brush marker.
• Once your Witches are dry, die cut them out with the coordinating dies.
• Place the Wonder of Oz Sentiments onto your BetterPress platform and follow the same steps as with the Witches to letterpress and cut them out, but this time, use BetterPress inks in green and pink—I used Leaf from the Flower Garden ink set and Taffy from the Jet Set ink set. Make sure to get both pink and green on each sentiment—or at least the one you want to use for this card!
• Trim a piece of Tutu ColorWheel Cardstock to an A2 card size (4.25 by 5.5 inches).
• Trim a piece of Fern ColorWheel Cardstock to 4 by 5.25 inches.
• Trim a piece of Porcelain Cotton Panel to 3.75 by 5 inches.
• On the Cotton Panel, blend some Distress Inks in Kitsch Flamingo and Mowed Lawn, keeping the colors on one side of the panel to match your dual-inked sentiment.
• Glue the Fern cardstock to the Tutu cardstock and the ink-blended Cotton Panel to the Fern cardstock using your favorite adhesive.
• Add the sentiment to the bottom right corner and Witches with foam adhesive.
• Pop on a few Aura AB Color Essential Gems.

Tip: When applying two colors of ink to your BetterPress plates, always start with the lightest color first, then do the darker color second. This will ensure that you don’t contaminate your lighter ink pad with the darker color.

Hello, crafty friends! This is Jennifer Ingle joining you today to showcase just how much you can do with one amazing Spellbinders 3-D embossing folder. This simple tool can be used in a variety of unique ways, allowing you to really get the most out of your stash every time you craft! Let’s start with the basics. Spellbinders 3-D Embossing Folders allow you to make a simple background that is full of interest with both physical and visual texture. The card below features a black embossed panel that adds the perfect drop-down to Dorothy and the sentiment banner. The image is colored only halfway to play on the Wizard of Oz imagery, going from black and white to full color. That beautifully embossed poppy background adds just a touch of something that brings the whole design together. Another great way to use 3-D embossing folders is the blackout technique. To get this look, apply a black pigment ink directly to the flat surfaces on the embossing folder prior to adding your cardstock. You may need to do this 2-3 times for nice, even coverage. This offers such a bold look and is bound to catch your recipient's eye. The Field of Poppies embossing folder had coordinating dies, allowing us to easily use them in yet another way! Simply die-cut your poppies and use alcohol markers to add color. These can then be adhered to the card for a pop of color that is sure to be noted. Finally, this card features two folders used on the same design. Our bricks make for the perfect yellow brick road. The Field of Poppies is used, yet again, on the top portion of the design. To add some depth and interest, gently run an ink pad over the raised portion of the design. This will pick up some of that ink in only the highest areas, making the design really stand out. Some sparkling glitter paper allows the die-cut portion to really shine, as well.
