How to Layer Ephemera for Cards Using Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed Collection

How to Layer Ephemera for Cards Using Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed Collection

Hello! It’s Sarah here from Sarah’s Stampin’ Retreat, and I’m delighted to be on the Spellbinders blog today sharing some ideas for how to layer your ephemera to create beautiful cards. I’m using the Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed collection, which I’ve completely fallen in love with – it combines breakfast elements with florals for a really elegant, fun look! There’s also a beautiful colour palette of bright pastels, which is offset with some beautiful gold foiling. I adore combining patterned paper and ephemera to make cards because you can layer away to your heart’s content and get a really beautiful card that doesn’t take all day to make. But sometimes the layering can be the difficult part, so I’m hoping to give some hints and tips to make the process a bit less daunting!

You Are My Cup of Tea

For this project, the strips of busier patterned paper draw your eye to the focal elements. Using the same colours in the background and the focal elements really helps to keep the card looking cohesive. Layering Ephemera on Your Cards by Sarah Phelan, 169215, RBD-011 To create this project:
  1. Cut a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” piece of blue patterned paper from the 12”x12” pack and add it to the front of your card.
  2. Cut a 3” x 4 ¼” strip of stripey paper and a 2 ¼” x 4 ¼” strip of floral paper. Glue them together and add to your card.
  3. Glue a 2 ¼” x 3 ½” piece of vellum to the centre of your, then add on the gold leaf ephemera.
  4. Pop the tea and pancakes ephemera and your sentiment up on foam pads.
  5. Add a heart sticker to the teapot!
Layering Ephemera on Your Cards by Sarah Phelan, 169215, RBD-011
TIP: Using a plainer paper in the background helps to balance out the busier papers used as strips. TIP: If your ephemera aren’t standing out enough against your background papers, a piece of vellum can work wonders to tone the background down! TIP: Add glue to the areas of the vellum that will be covered by ephemera to avoid a mess! TIP: Odd numbers of elements on your cards are often pleasing to the eye.

Poppin’ Up to Say Hi!

On this project, I used layers of patterned papers to frame the focal elements. The trick to doing this is to look for papers that echo the colours in your focal elements. I love how well thought-through the ephemera pack is for this collection! The toaster even has a little slot in it that the toast can go through! Layering Ephemera on Your Cards by Sarah Phelan, 169215, RBD-011 To create this project:
  1. Layer up the patterned papers on your card front – the white layer measures 4 ¼” x 5 ½”, the green layer measures 3 ¾” x 5”, and the coral layer measures 3 ¼” x 4 ½”
  2. Pop your ephemera up on foam pads, then add another foam pad behind the flower before adding it to your toaster.
Layering Ephemera on Your Cards by Sarah Phelan, 169215, RBD-011
TIP: Using foam pads behind different layers of ephemera help your card to look more eye-catching. If you’re not feeling confident about layering patterned papers, switch out one or two of the layers for coloured cardstock instead.

Enjoy the Good Life!

Acetate cards add a fun texture and dimension to a project, and they pair beautifully with the Breakfast in Bed Die-Cut Floral Stickers, which have a clear border. I like to add a piece of cardstock to the back of the card for my message instead of writing inside so that it doesn’t show through to the front. Layering Ephemera on Your Cards by Sarah Phelan, 169215, RBD-011 To create this project:
  1. Create a 4 ¼” x 5 ½” card blank from acetate and glue a 4 ¾” x 3 ½” piece of Bellini Cardstock inside.
  2. Layer some of the floral stickers across the front of your card, then trim off any excess.
  3. Layer up your sentiment piece on the front of your card, adding the sub-sentiment on foam pads.

TIP: If you have clear plastic packaging, upcycle this to use as acetate on your cards. TIP: Adding some of the stickers so that they hang off the card, then trimming off the excess, gives an organic look to the background. TIP: Layer up your sentiment elements – it adds interest and means they don’t take over the whole card!

Bright & Happy Card Making with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed | 3 Card Ideas

Hello, crafty friends! It’s Marie here again from Marie Nicole Designs, and I have a trio of cards to share with you using the Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed collection. A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 This is such a bright and happy collection! I was delighted to play around with all the patterned papers, ephemera, and stickers included. The colors and patterns are so perfect together that it is easy to create fun cards. Let’s take a look! A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 My first card is a birthday card that features a grouping of fun things that I personally would love on my birthday. Coffee, carbs, and a list of to-dos that are easily crossed off. I used the fun patterned paper as a background, and then sifted through the ephemera and sentiment packs to find just the right items to include. I found the to-do list and wrote in my own items. I arranged all these things and adhered some down using liquid glue and some with foam adhesive. A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 This is so fun to create, and with the wide variety of ephemera pieces in the collection, you could make individualized birthday cards for friends and loved ones you know. Just add a grouping of things that the birthday guy or gal loves! A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 This next card was equally fun to create. I again used the patterned papers, ephemera pieces, and a sentiment from the sentiment pack. This time, I added some patterned paper banners to the background. When mixing patterns, I like to vary the size of the pattern. So here I have a large and bold pattern with the stripes in front, a medium pattern with the florals on the right, and a small pattern of hearts on the left. This way, there is some variety without feeling too overwhelmed. BUT, since all the patterns are in the same color scheme, it is so easy to mix and match! A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 I selected a large circular sentiment to add over my patterned paper banners, but before I adhered it with foam adhesive, I added some floral ephemera behind it. I mixed a few bold blooms with some shiny gold leaf branches. Then topped it with the sentiment. It's always fun to embellish, as well. So I grabbed a few of my embellishments from my stash and added a few gold flat-backed pearls around the flowers.A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 My last card for this post (but definitely NOT my last card with this gorgeous collection!), is simple but it shows off some of my favorite paper designs in the collection. I grabbed these gorgeous large florals and paired them with the bold green stripes. The florals also have gold foiling as their lines, so thats built-in glimmer right there! A Trio of Cards Made Easy with Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed, 169218, 169220, 169214, 169219, 169217, 169216 I filled about ¾ of the card front with that gorgeous floral pattern, and then the last ¼ on the bottom with the stripes. Then, I grabbed a sentiment from the sentiment pack and added it with a thin strip of foam adhesive. It's such an EASY card to make, but perfect if you want to write an encouraging note to a friend. So that is my trio of cards using this Rosie’s Studio Breakfast in Bed collection. I hope you enjoyed stopping by today! Layered Frame Tea Card

Do you remember the frames with the multiple glass panels that you could collage photos on? I was inspired by those very frames for this layered “cup of tea” card. Plus, it’s a fun and different way to use your acetate, rather than for the usual shaker card!
  • Cut an A2 card base (5 ½ by 4 ¼ inches) from the Classic White cardstock.
  • Cut a matte from the Rosie’s Breakfast in Bed 12x12 Patterned Paper using the small floral pattern (5 ¼ by 4 inches). Glue this to the white cardstock base using your favorite adhesive.
  • Select the light peach colored square Chipboard Frame from the collection and trim 3 sheets of acetate to fit behind it.
  • Line the back side of the Chipboard Frame with 2mm thick foam adhesive and stick one of the squares of acetate to it.
  • Add the teapot and teacup to the front of the acetate and Frame using 1mm thick foam adhesive.
  • From the Sticker Book, add the clear-backed little white flower above the teapot, sticking it to the acetate, and the clear-backed tea bag, sticking it next to the teacup.
  • Pop the “You are my cup of tea” sentiment onto the frame using foam adhesive.
  • On the next sheet of acetate, add one of the flowers from the Diecut Floral Stickers pack, placing it so it will show below the teapot.
  • Add 1mm thick foam to the back of your Frame, and first sheet of acetate, then stick this second acetate sheet to the foam, layering it below the Frame and first acetate layer.
  • On the third and final sheet of acetate, place one of the leaf sprigs from the Diecut Floral Stickers pack, adding it to the right side of the acetate.
  • Using 1mm thick foam adhesive, layer this onto your Frame and acetate piece.
  • Trim the mini heart Patterned Cardstock to fit the back of your Frame and add it as the final bottom layer to your Frame using 1mm thick foam adhesive. Then glue this onto your card base using your favorite adhesive.
  • Pop on a few Teal Gems for a bit of sparkle!

TIP: To help you place your Die Cut Floral Stickers onto the acetate better, hold your frame piece above to help you get an idea of where to place your stickers on the next sheet of acetate. Remember, this isn’t foolproof for perfection, so be okay with what you get!

Quick and Easy Flapjack Card

This is the easiest card of the bunch, but it’s not short on handmade love! For this “stacks of love” pancake card, we’ll make use of a bunch of different ephemera pieces, plus die-cut cardstock and patterned paper.
  • Trim a piece of Cosmic Sky cardstock to an A2 card size (5 ½ by 4 ¼ inches).
  • From the 12x12 Patterned Paper pack, trim the small blue diamond pattern to make a card matte (5 ¼ by 4 inches). Glue this to your cardstock base using your favorite adhesive.
  • Use the Mirrored Arch Labels die to cut your focal point backer, using Breeze Cardstock and the large blue diamond pattern from the collection’s 12x12 Patterned Paper pack. Glue the two layers together.
  • From the Diecut Cardstock Sentiments pack, pick the “stacks of love,” “oh happy day,” “the good life” sentiments and the blue tag.
  • From the Diecut Cardstock Ephemera pack, select the stack of pancakes and the gold leaf stem.
  • Adhere the tag to the top right of the card base using your favorite adhesive.
  • Then add the leaf sprig using 1mm foam adhesive on the top 3 leaves to add dimension, layering the sprig over the tag.
  • Using 2mm thick foam adhesive, pop the die-cut focal point backer onto the center of the card.
  • Add the pancakes and the “oh happy day” sentiment to the focal point backer with 1mm thick foam adhesive.
  • Layer on the “stacks of love” sentiment using 2mm thick foam adhesive.
  • From the Chipboard Embellishments, select the red pitcher sticker and pop it onto your card using 2mm thick foam adhesive.
  • Then add “the good life” sentiment to the bottom left of your card with your favorite adhesive.
  • For a finishing sparkly touch, pop on a few Opal Gems.

TIP: Keeping the background papers and cardstocks monochromatic can really help your ephemera and stickers pop! Try this same technique out using a different color from the collection for even more fun food pun cards!

Interactive Toaster Card

This whimsical “poppin’ up to say hi” toaster card can be made interactive if you like. The movement is small, but it’s an easy way to add an extra dose of fun to your card. If you don’t want to make it interactive, simply glue the toast inside the slit of your toaster and layer everything as ordered below.
  • Trim a piece of Pomegranate Cardstock to an A2 card size (5 ½ by 4 ¼ inches).
  • Trim the mini hearts from the 12x12 Patterned Paper pack to an A2 matte (5 ¼ by 4 inches). Glue the patterned matte to the cardstock base using your favorite adhesive.
  • Use the Emerald Cut Labels and Tag die set to cut a layered focal point backer, using Mint Cardstock and more of the mini hearts Patterned Paper. Glue the hearts paper to the cardstock piece.
  • From the Diecut Cardstock Ephemera pack, select the toaster, the slices of toast, and the small cluster of 3 flowers.
  • From the Diecut Cardstock Sentiments pack, select the “poppin’ up to say hi.”
  • Slide the toast into the precut slit in the toaster down as far as it will go and lay it over the layered focal point backer piece. Using a pencil, mark the bottom of the toaster.
  • Then, while holding the toast and the top of the toaster in place, gently lift the bottom of the toaster up and make a mark at the very bottom of the toast.
  • Hold the toaster in place and slide the toast up a bit—this will be the farthest up it will go with the interactive movement. Then again, hold the top of the toaster and the toast in place while lifting the bottom up and again make a mark at the bottom of the toast. You should now have 3 lines on your focal point backer.
  • Using a craft knife, cut a slit about 1/8 of an inch wide between the top two marks you made, cutting through the patterned paper and cardstock of your focal point backer.
  • Trim a small piece of acetate to ½ inch wide; length doesn’t matter right now, but should be at least 3 inches long.
  • Trim a piece of patterned paper to ½ inch wide by 1 ¾ inches. Score it at 1/4, 3/8, 5/8, 1 1/8, 1 3/8, and 1 ½. Fold the ¼ inch sections on either side of the ½ section in the center down over the center. The 1/8 inch sections will stand up and then fold the outer ¼ inch section down to create little flaps. Use liquid adhesive to glue the ¼ inch sections to the ½ inch section and the 1/8 inch sections together.
  • Flatten this out and cut the shape in half so it’s only ¼ inch wide instead of a half inch wide. (Folding a ½ inch wide strip is so much easier than a ¼ inch wide strip, and now you have a little mechanism for another card!)
  • Glue the mechanism you just created to one end of your acetate strip. Fold the wings up and slide the mechanism through the slit on the focal point backer, and then flatten the wings back out.
  • Holding the slider mechanism so that it’s all the way down, add 2mm thick foam adhesive around the acetate, adhering the foam to the back of the focal point backer. This will help keep the acetate moving smoothly up and down.
  • Add more foam adhesive to the focal point backer and glue it to the center of your card base.
  • Add 2 or 3 mm-thick foam adhesive to the sides of your toaster ephemera, making sure the foam doesn’t interfere with the toast.
  • You may need to add a little strip of paper to the mechanism flaps to give more contact area between the toast and the mechanism to make it a little sturdier. Add liquid glue to the mechanism.
  • Place your toaster over the mechanism and press the toast to the mechanism. Check to make sure the mechanism works.
  • Make sure the toast is all the way down. From the Chipboard Embellishments, select the strawberry and press it onto the top of the acetate strip so that it doesn’t fall too much over the edge of the card. Trim off any excess acetate above the strawberry.
  • Add the floral cluster using 1mm thick foam under the bottom right of the toaster.
  • Add the “poppin’ up to say hi” sentiment with 1mm thick foam.
  • Layer on the yellow flower Chipboard Embellishment sticker using 2mm thick foam adhesive.
  • Pop a few of the Opal Gems on for a bit of sparkle!
TIP: Make sure to test your mechanism as you work, ensuring that it slides up and down easily. If your foam adhesive is a little tacky on the sides and your acetate sticks to it, brush a little embossing anti-static powder onto the sides of your foam—be sure to do this before removing the backing to stick your focal point backer down.
