Common Card Sizes Explained: A Complete Beginner’s Guide for Cardmakers

Hello there and welcome back to the Beginners Blog Post Series. It’s Lisa Tilson here with you again, and today we are going to be talking about common card sizes. Those go-to sizes we all know and love, which feature heavily in our cardmaking projects. This subject was touched on briefly in the previous post covering how to make a handmade card, but what is important to think about is that the size of your card can really help to bring your design to life.

Common Card Sizes Explained: A Complete Beginner’s Guide for Cardmakers

Why Does Size Matter?

There are many reasons why size can matter when sitting down to create your card. Here are a few things to consider:
  • What size of card will best showcase your idea? Some designs look fantastic on an A2 card but don’t translate as well to other formats.
  • What shape of card will work best? Will the design work better on a rectangle or a square or maybe an arch or circle?
  • What do you feel confident making? This is particularly relevant when starting out on your cardmaking journey. For example, you may feel more confident working on a small panel, where you can focus on fine details and the scale feels less intimidating. Alternatively, you may feel happier using a larger panel, where you can express your ideas with greater freedom and movement.
  • Do you need to mass-produce your design? Often relevant for Christmas/holiday cardmaking, and this can have an influence on what size of card you make.
  • Do you have the right products for this card size, and will they look proportionate on the finished design?
  • Do you have an envelope to fit, or can you make one?
  • Is postage cost an issue? This will vary country by country, and in most cases, smaller is more cost-effective if you send out multiple cards.
So, let’s look at common card sizes in the USA first.

USA

A2 Cards

Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes By far the most common size cardmakers use is the A2, top‑folding, vertical card design.
  • This measures 4.25” x 5.5” (created with a panel of 4.25” x 11” cardstock, scored and folded at 5.5”).
The A2 top-folding horizontal card format is also popular.
  • This also measures 4.25” x 5.5” (created with a panel of 8.5” x 5.5” cardstock, scored and folded at 4.25”).
Take a look at the two card examples above, which show how a design can work depending on the card’s orientation. This is often second nature when thinking about making your card. You are guided by what you are using on it – the size of the die or image and where your sentiment might best fit. If a top-folding horizontal or vertical card design is not your preferred option, then you can create A2 vertical and horizontal side-folding cards.
  • For an A2 side-folding vertical card, you would need to cut a piece of cardstock to 8.5” x 5.5” and score/fold it at 4.25”.
  • For an A2 side-folding horizontal card, you would need your cardstock to be 11” x 4.25” and scored/folded at 5.5”.

A7 Cards

The larger A7 format is often seen for invitations or cards created for extra special occasions.
  • This type of card measures 5” x 7” (created with a panel of 7” x 10” cardstock, scored and folded at 5”).
In the example below, the size of the card was determined by the die set - particularly the cuckoo‑cottage pendulums, which were designed to swing back and forth. You could have used this set on an A2 card, but the pendulums would have needed to be shortened. And who doesn’t love a little bit of interaction and fun on a card! Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes Some people prefer creating with A7 more than any other. The extra space allows for a larger design and gives those bigger stamped images, stencils, sentiments, and dies room to truly shine.

Slimline/Mini Slimline

There are some designs that look fabulous on a more elongated format. That can include Slimline cards and the more recently popular Mini Slimline cards. Mini Slimline and Slimline cards can be ideal if you want to repeat an image in different colours, or if you’re working with a particularly tall element - like a long-stemmed flower - that needs the extra height. These formats also work beautifully for scene building, especially when you want to include elements such as layered clouds, mountain ranges and elongated vistas.
  • Slimline cards measure 3.5” x 8.5” (created with a panel of 8.5” x 7” cardstock, scored and folded at 3.5”).
The example below shows a slimline card that has been created with a slimline die and so the design fills the card panel perfectly from left to right and top to bottom. Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes
  • Mini Slimline cards measure 6.5” x 3.5” (created with a panel of 7” x 6.5” cardstock, scored and folded at 3.5”).
The two cards below both rely heavily on repetition across the card front. Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes

Square

This could be anything from 3.5” x 3.5” up to 6” x 6” (usually in 0.5” increments) – but it can be whatever you want it to be. Square cards are popular across the globe! For context, the cards pictured below are sized:
  • 4.25” x 4.25” (8.5” x 4.25” cardstock, scored and folded at 4.25”) and
  • 4” x 4” (8” x 4” cardstock, scored and folded at 4”).
These sizes allow for a more compact design. Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes

Shaped Cards

Let’s not forget the different shaped cards which can be so playful and really help to accentuate a certain aspect of the design! Nesting dies that are used on A2 rectangle cards are sized so that the largest die is no bigger than 4.25” x 5.5”. The same applies to other shaped nesting dies -  with the largest die being designed to fit on an A2 rectangle card base if you prefer not to create a shaped card. The cards below show how you can use both an arch and an oval to really focus in on a particular image. For the card on the left, the arch shape complements the curved tops of the tulips and daffodils. For the card on the right, the foiled and coloured image has been die cut so that the flowers almost fill the whole card front, with just a little bit of empty space either side. Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes

Common Sized Cards - UK/Europe/International

Most European and International countries follow the IS0 216 International Paper Size Standard with by far the most common card size being A6.
  • A6 cards measure 4.13” x 5.83” when scored and folded.
However, as in the USA, square cards are very popular too, ranging from 4” x 4” through to 6” x 6”. Spellbinders ColorWheel Cardstock is stocked in the Spellbinders UK shop, and it comes in an A4 format making it ideally suited for card creators across UK, Europe and International. Each sheet of A4 cardstock measures 8.27” x 11.69” and this allows for two A6 note cards/card bases or four A6 panels. Spellbinders Beginners Blog Post Series – Common Card Sizes For a comparison between American A2 and UK/European/International A6 cards see the two card examples above. These designs are both created on A6 sized cards – one with a horizontal design and the other with a vertical design. The elements on both cards have been taken from original US A2 sized cards and recreated on a European/UK/International A6 sized card. So, US manufactured dies can be used on many different sized cards and vice versa.

Matting and Layering on Different Card Sizes

Whatever size or shape of card you want to make, there are nesting/layering dies to help you step up your game. If you reside outside of the US, you will easily be able to find dies that work with a European/UK/International A6 format. If you can’t find dies, use your paper trimmer to cut the layers to size instead! Understanding how different card sizes and formats work - and how your supplies interact with them - can help guide your thinking process and influence the final look of your design. Each size or shape can offer its own benefits. In the end, the right size is what you feel happy with – the size that supports your ideas and helps fuel your creativity! How to Color the House-Mouse Party Parade Stamp with Copic Markers – Step-by-Step Birthday Card Tutorial

How to Color the House-Mouse Party Parade Stamp with Copic Markers – Step-by-Step Birthday Card Tutorial

Hello there, Michelle Short here to share a step-by-step tutorial with you using the House-Mouse Party Parade Cling Stamp Set. This adorable stamp set is perfect for birthday cards, but any celebration would work too. I am colouring the image using Copic Markers, which are alcohol based, but any colouring medium will work here – pencils, paints, etc. If you are a beginner colourist, this image is perfect for you, as the stamped image already has shading lines on it, so a lot of the work is already done by the stamp! HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635

STAMPING THE IMAGE & SENTIMENT

HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Remove foam insert from Mini MISTI.
  2. Place panel of white alcohol marker-friendly cardstock inside, line up with one of the corners (this is so that if you have to stamp the image twice, the cardstock will remain in the same place).
  3. Place House-Mouse Party Parade mouse image stamp on top (do not worry about getting the image straight) with the red rubber side facing down.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Close door of Mini MISTI to stick the stamp to the door.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Ink up the stamp using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink (or other alcohol marker-friendly black ink).
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Close door of Mini MISTI to transfer ink onto cardstock.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635 Depending on how well your ink pad is inked, you may need to repeat the process to stamp another layer of ink on top of the first one.
  1. Remove stamp from Mini MISTI.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Remove cardstock panel from Mini MISTI.
  2. Place second largest die from Nested Postage Labels & Tag Etched Dies onto panel, cut side down.
  3. Hold in place with Best Ever Craft Tape.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Run through Platinum Six Die Cutting Machine using the following sandwich (bottom to top):
  • A Platform Base
  • B Platform Top
  • C Cutting Plate
  • Image panel with die on top
  • C Cutting Plate
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Place image panel back into Mini MISTI.
  2. Place piece of plastic/acetate over the image.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Place sentiment where you want to stamp it.
  2. Close door of Mini MISTI to pick up stamp.
  3. Ink sentiment using Memento Tuxedo Black Ink.
  4. Stamp onto plastic/acetate.
TIP: The purpose of stamping onto the plastic/acetate is so that you can see if you are stamping the sentiment straight and in the place that you want it to be. If you are not happy with the placement, you can clean off the plastic, reposition your stamp, and try again as many times as needed. This way, you are not ruining your panel if you stamp it wonky!
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Once you are happy with the placement of the sentiment, remove the plastic, re-ink the sentiment stamp, and stamp down onto the cardstock panel.

COLOURING THE IMAGE

HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Add a dark shade of brown (Copic Marker E59) to where the darkest areas are on the largest mouse’s fur.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Add in a medium shade of brown (Copic Marker E57) next to the dark brown and bring it further into the fur.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Fill in the rest of the fur with a light shade of brown (Copic Marker E55).
TIP: Do not worry too much about blending the shades together, since fur is not supposed to be smooth anyway. However, I do go over some areas of the darker shade with the next shade to dry and blend them together slightly.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Add a dark cream (Copic Marker E53) shade to the darkest areas on the face, ears, back legs, front legs, tail and tummy.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Go over a little of the darker shade with a lighter cream shade (Copic Marker E51) to blend them together and then fill in more of the areas with this shade.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Fill in the rest of the areas with a light cream shade (Copic Marker E50).

  1. Blend out and add medium pink shade (Copic Marker RV55) to the middle of the hat.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Blend and fill in the rest of the party hat with light shade of pink (Copic Marker RV52).
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Repeat the process above to colour in the hats of the smaller mice.
TIP: There is a pattern on the hats, so you could add different colours to them, but for today, I decided to keep it simple and colour the whole hat one colour. HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Colour the wind-up part of the party blower with the same three pink shades you used for the mouse’s hats.

  1. Blend and fill in more of the balloon using medium shade of pink (Copic Marker RV55).
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Blend and fill in the rest of the balloon with light shade of pink (Copic Marker RV55).
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Repeat the process to colour in the rest of the balloons.
TIP: Since the balloons overlap with each other and are meant to be transparent, pick colours that will blend nicely together. Here, the yellow and pink make a darker yellow/orange shade.
If you are unsure of what colours to pick for images or where the shading should be, refer to the stamp packaging. There is usually a coloured image on there that you can reference. HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635
  1. Cut strips of thin foam tape down using scissors.
  2. Adhere to the back of the image panel.
  3. Remove backings off foam tape.

  1. Add Pink Color Essentials Gems to the top of the hats to finish.
HOW TO STAMP & COLOUR HOUSE-MOUSE PARTY PARADE, RSC-067, S5-635 If you feel intimidated by colouring with alcohol markers, I hope that I may have helped ease some of that for you by breaking down my process for colouring. I usually use three shades of one colour for each section, but you can reduce that to two. Do whatever you feel comfortable with and enjoy the process. Remember it is only paper; you can always start again if you need to! Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope you have a wonderful day! Step-by-Step Thinking of You Card with Spellbinders Upright Italic Everyday Sentiments

Step-by-Step Thinking of You Card with Spellbinders Upright Italic Everyday Sentiments

Hello crafty friends! It’s Lisa Tilson here with you today to create a flower-filled “Thinking of You” card. I am doing a step-by-step photo tutorial using the Upright Italic Thinking Of You Press + Foil Plate, which is one of three new sentiments in the Paul Antonio Upright Italic Everyday Sentiments Collection.  These sentiments are sized perfectly for a variety of card sizes, and I am using it on an A2 card today. As this is a “Thinking of You” card, I have chosen to pair the sentiment with some flowers and have gone for a fairly muted, but I think still very pretty, colour palette.

Thinking Of You

For all of the die cutting, use the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine with the die cutting sandwich as follows (from bottom to top):
  • Plate A – Platform Base
  • Plate B – Platform Top
  • Plate C – Cutting Plate
  • Plate C – Cutting Plate
The cardstock/die will be inserted between the two cutting plates with the die sitting on top of the cardstock, cutting side down.

Creating The Pressed Background Panel and Die Cutting The Flowers

How To Create A Floral Thinking Of You Card, BP-355, S6-250, S5-647
  1. Take an A2 panel of Pebble BetterPress Cardstock and the Perfect Touch Rectangles and Tag Etched Dies.
How To Create A Floral Thinking Of You Card, BP-355, S6-250, S5-647
  1. Secure the largest rectangle die to the Pebble cardstock panel using small pieces of Best Ever Craft Tape and run it through the Platinum SIX Die Cutting Machine.
TIP: The largest rectangle die just fits the A2 Pebble cardstock panel; however, if you find it easier, use an A7 panel of cardstock and die cut from that.
How To Create A Floral Thinking Of You Card, BP-355, S6-250, S5-647
  1. Place the Upright Italic Thinking Of You Press + Foil Plate onto the BetterPress Letterpress System Chase (magnetic platform).
  2. Tape the die-cut panel to the underside of the Platen (clear top plate) using low-tack tape. The panel needs to be face up when you are taping it (so the detail from the die cutting is clearly visible).
  3. Ink up the press plate using Thunder BetterPress Ink. Use a pouncing motion to apply the ink until it is evenly covered. Reink your ink pad if necessary – this really helps with good coverage.
  4. Flip the Platen over and clip it back onto the Chase. You are now ready to press your plate.
Note: The additional pieces of low-tack tape that you see around the Chase in the photo are to help ensure it doesn’t shift. This is particularly useful when you are pressing the same press plate twice to get better coverage.

  1. Take the Vivid Blooms Etched Dies and place the dies onto your cardstock.
Note: the dies in the picture are facing upwards, so it is clearer for you to see which die is being cut from which cardstock. These will be turned over and taped in place for the die-cutting process.
  1. Place the leaves onto some Fog ColorWheel Cardstock.
  2. Place the largest flower onto some Dahlia ColorWheel Cardstock.
  3. Place the small four-petal flowers and the group of flower centres die onto some Wild Berry ColorWheel Cardstock.
  4. Place the small, rounded flowers that will go on the leaf sprig onto some Bellini ColorWheel Cardstock.
  5. Place the solid and outline flower dies (as seen in the photo), and the five tiny flower centres die onto Bellini ColorWheel Cardstock.
  6. Place the other solid and outline flower layers onto Chiffon ColorWheel Cardstock.
  7. Run these through the die-cutting machine.
TIP: Use a Craft Stax Medium Tray to keep your die cuts in one place.
How To Create A Floral Thinking Of You Card, BP-355, S6-250, S5-647
  1. To finish the die cutting, place the five tiny flower centres die onto some Chiffon ColorWheel Cardstock.
  2. Place the outline flower die onto Belllini ColorWheel Cardstock (as shown). You will only need the centre piece of this die cut.
  3. Run these through the die-cutting machine to finish the die-cutting.
