How to Foil and Stencil Tulips: Yana’s Tulips Collection Step-by-Step Tutorial

Hello Crafters! Nancy Leppek here from Scrapper at Heart.com. I am delighted to be back as a guest on the Spellbinder’s Blog. Today, I am sharing a step-by-step tutorial using the gorgeous Yana’s Tulips Collection, and specifically the Layered Tulips and Daffodils Better Press Plate with matching Tulips and Daffodils Layering Stencils. I needed a Thinking of You card, so that is what we are going to make. Let’s get to it, shall we! Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Using your Glimmer Hot Foil System, a 4.25 x5.50 piece of Alabaster Cardstock, the Tulips and Daffodils Better Press Plate, and a piece of Matte Gold Foil the same size as the plate, it is time to foil. Turn on the power button. The power light will be red. When the platform is heated to the optimal temperature, the ready light will turn green. Place your plate you are foiling on the platform and press the timer button. Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Once the light turns a solid green, you are ready to dislodge your platform and layer your sandwich. Do this step quickly.
TIP: I always dislodge my Glimmer plate from the machine before I add the top plates so they don’t shift when I disconnect it from the base.
Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 My foil sandwich-Better Press Plate, foil-dull side up, cardstock, the clear spacer pad, and finally the thin green shim on top. Run it through your Platinum 6. Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Pull the foil off your cardstock and admire your results! Best part! [gallery type="rectangular" columns="2" size="large" link="file" ids="eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczpcL1wvc3BlbGxiaW5kZXJzYmxvZy5jb21cL3dwLWNvbnRlbnRcL3VwbG9hZHNcLzIwMjZcLzAyXC9OLi1MZXBwZWstMjAyNi03LTEud2VicCIsInRpdGxlIjoiTi4gTGVwcGVrIDIwMjYgIzciLCJjYXB0aW9uIjoiIiwiYWx0IjoiIiwiZGVzY3JpcHRpb24iOiIifQ==,eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczpcL1wvc3BlbGxiaW5kZXJzYmxvZy5jb21cL3dwLWNvbnRlbnRcL3VwbG9hZHNcLzIwMjZcLzAyXC9OLi1MZXBwZWstMjAyNi04LTEud2VicCIsInRpdGxlIjoiTi4gTGVwcGVrIDIwMjYgIzgiLCJjYXB0aW9uIjoiIiwiYWx0IjoiWWFuYVx1MjAxOXMgVHVsaXBzIC0gQm91cXVldCBvZiBIdWdzLCBCUC0zNTksIFM1LTcyMSIsImRlc2NyaXB0aW9uIjoiIn0="] Repeat these foiling steps with your Bouquet of Hugs Sentiment. After it is foiled, cut it out with the coordinating die and Best Ever Craft Tape to hold it in place. Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Using the same Best Ever Craft Tape, tape your floral card base to a surface of your choosing. Using the coordinating stencils starting with #1 and going through until #5, ink your flowers and stems. I also tape down my stencils so they don’t move while inking. I am using Hero Arts Soft Blossom for all of my florals and Peeled Paint Oxide Ink for the stems. [gallery type="rectangular" columns="2" link="file" size="large" ids="eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczpcL1wvc3BlbGxiaW5kZXJzYmxvZy5jb21cL3dwLWNvbnRlbnRcL3VwbG9hZHNcLzIwMjZcLzAyXC9OLi1MZXBwZWstMjAyNi0xMS53ZWJwIiwidGl0bGUiOiJOLiBMZXBwZWsgMjAyNiAjMTEiLCJjYXB0aW9uIjoiIiwiYWx0IjoiWWFuYVx1MjAxOXMgVHVsaXBzIC0gQm91cXVldCBvZiBIdWdzLCBCUC0zNTksIFM1LTcyMSIsImRlc2NyaXB0aW9uIjoiIn0=,eyJ1cmwiOiJodHRwczpcL1wvc3BlbGxiaW5kZXJzYmxvZy5jb21cL3dwLWNvbnRlbnRcL3VwbG9hZHNcLzIwMjZcLzAyXC9OLi1MZXBwZWstMjAyNi0xMi0xLndlYnAiLCJ0aXRsZSI6Ik4uIExlcHBlayAyMDI2ICMxMiIsImNhcHRpb24iOiIiLCJhbHQiOiJZYW5hXHUyMDE5cyBUdWxpcHMgLSBCb3VxdWV0IG9mIEh1Z3MsIEJQLTM1OSwgUzUtNzIxIiwiZGVzY3JpcHRpb24iOiIifQ=="]
TIP: When inking, make sure you start with a small amount of ink, as it is easier to add more color than take it away.  I go in small circular motions and stamp off the extra ink on my glass surface before I bring it to my paper. When complete, take a soft tissue and wipe down your card front, so that you take off the excess ink sitting on top of the foil, and the foil shines through.
Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Take the Linear Touch Rectangle Die and your completed inked card base and run it through your Platinum 6 to make a decorative edged frame. Cut out a matching A2 card base measuring 5 ½  X 8 ½ and score it at 4 ¼, and glue the card front to the card base. Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Using any small die that cuts out very tiny dots (I keep these from various die sets in a dish on my desk), cut out 5 of them using a piece of Gold Glitter paper and glue them randomly on the card front.
TIP: This is kinda my signature style, as I rarely make a card without some sort of silver or gold sparkly paper gems.
Yana’s Tulips - Bouquet of Hugs, BP-359, S5-721 Tie a standard bow on the left side of the card using a 25-inch piece of sherry ivory ribbon. I want to thank Spellbinders for the opportunity to guest here today, and a big thanks to you for sticking with me. I know my process pics are not nearly as good as other designers', but it is all about creating. Isn’t it!   Feel free to reach out to me on my blog Scrapper at Heart, my Instagram Page, and or my Facebook page and say hello. How to Make a Tulips and Daffodils Card with Spellbinders BetterPress (Step-by-Step Tutorial)

Hello there, Michelle Short here to share a step-by-step tutorial with you using the new Tulips and Daffodils Press + Foil Plate from Yana’s Tulips Collection. I chose to press the plate, but it works beautifully foiled too! There are lots of ways to colour the image, but for today’s project, I am using the Layered Tulips and Daffodils Stencils to colour the image using ink blending. PRESSING THE IMAGE

HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Flip Platen of Betterpress Letterpress System over and place Porcelain BetterPress A7 Cotton Card Panel inside the registration marks. Hold in place with Best Ever Craft Tape in the corners.

  1. Place Tulips and Daffodils Press + Foil Plate onto Chase (the Chase is magnetic so it will hold in place). Use the registration marks on the Chase to centre it.
  2. Tap BetterPress Black Ink onto the plate and swivel the ink pad slightly to get a good coverage of ink.
TIP: Make sure to use a well-inked pad. You will get a better impression that way.

  1. Lift Platten from platform to reveal pressed image.
  2. Remove cardstock panel from Platen by carefully removing the tape.
  3. Remove plate from Chase and clean.
TIP: I used two shims underneath the Chase, but you may need more or less depending on your machine. If you are getting too much ink in places where you do not want it, remove a shim. If you are not getting a solid impression, add a shim.

STENCILLING

  1. Using a scoring board and bone folder, score a line approximately ½” inch from top of arch on one of arched panels, to create a hinge.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Add adhesive to the hinge, making sure no adhesive goes under the scoring line.
  2. Adhere the other arched panel on top. Pressing down where the adhesive is. This creates an arch-shaped card base.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Make sure that your card base stands up nicely.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Apply adhesive to the back of the image panel and adhere to the front of the card base.
TIP: The hinge method is an easy way to create shaped cards, however, you can die cut directly on top of a top-folded card base. Make sure to have the edge of the die extend the edge of the card so that it does not cut the fold of the card. This works well too, but it is sometimes difficult to cut all the way through two layers of cardstock depending on the shape of the die.

SENTIMENT

HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Place sentiments from Bouquet of Hugs Sentiments Press + Foil Plate & Die Set onto Chase of BetterPress Letterpress System.
  2. Add ink to sentiments using BetterPress Black Ink.
TIP: I wasn’t sure what sentiment I wanted to use, so I pressed two. Keep extra sentiments in a pocket and keep for future projects.
  1. Add Cotton Card Panel to the back of the Platen and hold in place with Best Ever Craft Tape.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Flip platen over and place onto platform.
  2. Run through Platinum Six Die Cutting Machine.
  3. Remove Platen from platform.
  4. Remove sentiment panel from Platen.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Place dies over the sentiments and hold in place with Best Ever Craft Tape.
  2. Run through Platinum Six Die Cutting Machine.
TIP: Holding dies down with low-tack tape, like Best Ever Craft Tape, prevents them from moving whilst being run through die cutting machine.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Remove sentiment from die.
  2. Place foam squares on the back of the sentiment.

  1. Remove backings from foam squares.
  2. Adhere sentiment to card.
TIP: I like using tweezers to place elements down onto cards. That way I can hover it in place to check I like the placement before pressing it down.

EMBELLISH

HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526
  1. Pick up Peach Blush Color Essentials Gems using pokey end of Tool ‘n One.
  2. Place gems onto card.
HOW TO COLOR AN IMAGE WITH STENCILS USING YANA’S TULIPS, BP-359, BD-1072, BP-354, S5-526 I hope you have enjoyed seeing how to add colour to images using stencils. I used multiple shades of inks for my ink blending, but if you wanted to make it simpler, you could use just one shade for the daffodils, one for the tulips, and one for the stems and leaves. Experiment with colours too, the great thing about cardmaking is that you do not have to stick to traditional colours if you do not want to! Thank you so much for stopping by today. I hope you have a wonderful day!
